Happy Beltane!

In the Northern Hemisphere May 1st marks Beltane, or May Day, a Gaelic fire festival that celebrates spring in full force. It marks the halfway point between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice. Traditionally this day was full of bonfires, feasts, and decorating the Maypole. The holiday begins on the evening of April 30th and continues until sunset the next day.

Hawthorn blooms at the end of April/beginning of May, traditionally signaling the time to celebrate Beltane. The flowers are creamy white, the branches adorned with sharp thorns. Hawthorn represents protection, banishment, consecration, and blessings, and was thought to mark the gateway to the Fae world.
